This clever car add-on uses AI to block out just the Sun

#artificialintelligence

German engineering company Bosch has come up with a clever new automotive sun visor that uses an LCD panel and artificial intelligence to block out only the Sun in the driver's vision. The idea is to give them an unobstructed view of the road ahead when the sun is low in the sky. Each year, thousands of car accidents are related to sun glare, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Bosch's Virtual Visor learns where the driver's face and eyes are thanks to an accompanying facial recognition camera aimed at the driver's seat. It then analyzes the driver's face for shadows to decide which portions of the honeycomb-patterned LCD panel to darken, while leaving the rest of the panel transparent. The Virtual Visor will make its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, which is opening its doors tomorrow.

Google Next 2018: How Google's new Edge TPU is transforming quality assurance at LG Internet of Business

#artificialintelligence

Andrew Hobbs delves into Google's latest edge computing developments at Cloud Next 2018, and sits down with Product Lead Indranil Chakraborty to discuss how LG is driving remarkable results with Google's new Edge TPU. In July this year, Google announced its new Edge TPU and Cloud IoT Edge products. The 40x40mm tensor processing unit delivers high performance in a small physical and power footprint, enabling high-accuracy machine learning inferences at the edge. It represents the company's response to the need for more and more data streams to be processed at the point of origin, bypassing the latency and bandwidth issues that cloud solutions introduce. AI models trained in the cloud increasingly need to be run at the edge.

LG G7 Release Date: Galaxy S9 Rival To Feature Advanced LCD Display

International Business Times

South Korea media outlets are now saying that LG Electronics will likely adopt an advanced type of liquid crystal diode (LCD) display for its upcoming G7 flagship phone. The move is seen as the company's way to make the premium device more affordable and attractive to consumers. Korea Herald reported Monday that the LG G7 is now predicted to feature an advanced LCD panel, called M LCD. The panels will reportedly be manufactured by the tech firm's very own LG Display. An M LCD panel has pixels that are composed of green, red, blue and white colors. The pixels of such an advanced LCD panel are said to emit more light than standard LCD panels, but they consume 40 percent less power.

The Tech Skills Gap Will Test Foxconn's New Wisconsin Factory

WIRED

Taiwanese electronics juggernaut and leading Apple supplier Foxconn announced Wednesday that it intends to invest $10 billion in a new manufacturing plant in Wisconsin, where it plans to make LCD panels bound for computers, healthcare devices, and even vehicles. The White House touted the announcement as a victory for senior adviser Jared Kushner's Office of American Innovation, and marked it as a milestone in President Trump's promise to bring manufacturing back to the United States. "Foxconn joins a growing list of industry leaders who understand that America's capabilities are limitless and that America's workers are unmatched," President Trump said at the White House announcement, flanked by House Speaker Paul Ryan, Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, and Foxconn chairman Terry Gou. Yet, the 3,000 jobs Foxconn says it will create in Wisconsin aren't the kind of manufacturing jobs that so many laid off auto and steel workers have been clamoring for. Nor are they a pathway to the American-made iPhone President Trump promised during the 2016 election.

According to Sony, Google Assistant will be added to their new sets via a firmware update later this year. The sooner they can do it, the better. Tens of millions of people are expected to decide it's finally time to buy a 4K TV this year, and the deals are delicious at every point of the pricing spectrum. Variety abounds too, as the industry's big brands try to solve different pieces of the picture-quality puzzle.
